Pulsarus - has been around since 2, always looking for whatever may define the “modern jazz” or the “jazz today”¬ — as labels wear out fast and even “jazz” itself can be a controversial term. Pulsarus’s effort goes into taking a next step forward as regards composition, improvisation, and sound. There is no point in reproducing the past. I am attracted to unchartered territories, to things that are not obvious, perhaps even difficult upon a first listening. I want to be intrigued and engaged. Improvisation strategies used in “Bee Itch” are far from the typical variational quality of jazz. The phrasing and breathing is done by all musicians in unison; this plus an ambiguous musical language result in an intriguing mix. Pulsarus is a wave of explosion and tenderness, post-rock weight, rage, yelling. A mass assault. There’s a high amplitude of tension, the essential electronics. An almost unbearable obsession can side with a paralyzing melancholy. There are repetitions or a neurotic absence of them. There are melodies, too. I recommend giving it a loud listen!
