Wojciech Błażejczyk is one of the most intriguing and original composers of the Polish young generation. His works include chamber music, orchestral, and electro-orchestral pieces. Obviously a man of many parts, Błażejczyk is an operative instrumentalist and improviser, electric guitar being his main passion. The album “Loopowizacje” (“Loopovisations”) features compositions for electric guitar, whether solo or with a chamber orchestra. Especially interesting are pieces for electric guitar and real-time electronics generated by means of pre-programmed loops and transformation algorithms. The composer uses a prepared guitar altering the instrument’s timbre with metal wires, Jew’s harp, wooden sticks (e.g. a pencil), metal tube, brass button, fiddlestick, egg slicer and a screw. Improvisation plays a vital part in the compositional frame of Involutio and Loopowizacje.2 (Loopovisations.2). Music 4 Four is a more meditative piece written – quite scrupulously – for accordion, bass clarinet, cello and electric guitar which is a leading instrument here. Arytmia (Arrhythmia), on the other hand, is a study of polyrhythmics. Dziki gon (Wild Hunt) is a one-minute musical joke. In the Chicken Run played by solo guitar the composer uses only unconventional guitar techniques such as touching the strings with a screw or hitting them with a metal stick; it is a virtuoso piece. An opening composition, Guitar Sculptures, is a set of six miniatures demonstrating fascinating sound possibilities of the guitar. Profound expressiveness, vitality, distinct rhythmic patterns, solicitude for sound and form – all these are common denominators of Wojciech Błażejczyk’s compositions. I also appreciate his sincerity and courage with which he expresses emotions as well as his unceasing search for the new sound. It is worth noting that despite his young age Błażejczyk has been a laureate in many composition competitions and his pieces are performed at prominent music festivals in Poland and abroad.
