about

Marcin Masecki – upright and digital pianos

Anyone who listens to Masecki’s Mazurkas will immediately become aware that there is little rural tradition preserved within them. There is much more modernity – the city, constant haste and anxiety – inducing life dynamics. Yet traditional mazurkas, still played nowadays even in the Rawa Mazowiecka region, have their own world as well: a “fractured” pulse, rapid tempo, odd time signatures and characteristic accents. Masecki thrives on this, while still revealing something completely different. “Twisted” rhythms, bass in the left hand with a ping pong ball-like bounce to it, melodies in the right which sourban und like piano exercises, Alberti bass (the constant “um pa pa”), sudden changes in accentuation, cyclic patterns, repeats, adjustments, mistakes (which become starting points for new ideas), and finally dissonant-sounding chords that, instead of culmination, bring about even greater disintegration. Masecki wanted his pieces to be simple in texture. There wasn’t any virtuosity in them. “I wanted these mazurkas to have a distilled flavor to them, and that required persistent concentration. That’s what was most difficult.” Virtuosic they’re not; indeed, they ‘re anti-virtuosic and, in their own way, anti-mazurkan and anti-dance.
